Welcome to Global Mangrove Watch.

The Global Mangrove Watch (GMW), in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Mangrove Capital Africa, has produced a global map of mangrove extent for 2010 based on L-band radar and Landsat sensor data and changes (losses and gains) from 1996, 2007, 2008 and 2009 and to 2015 and 2016. Annual maps of mangrove change are also planned for subsequent years.

The EarthTrack Mangroves App has been developed to allow collection of supportive land cover and change information from mangrove areas and also their surrounds, with these based on the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s (FAO) Land Cover Classification System (LCCS). Such data are used to support the development and validation of the global algorithm and mapping.

When submitted, the data collected using EarthTrack Mangroves are integrated within a global data base (see Land Cover on the home page) that is continually updated. All data are made freely available to the global community as text and vector files but are anonymous.

The App also allows the collection of plot-based measurements of individual trees, which can be accessed on this GMW webpage.

To download the App, you need to first register on earthtrack.aber.ac.uk (see Download) and then instructions are provided for installation. EarthTrack Mangroves utilises a tablet or android phone.
